This is a colourful little sap sucking bug called a TREEHOPPER! These tiny but mighty creatures are the wizards of the forest with bright and colourful exoskeletons that resemble little wizards caps in order to magically disappear to any bird or critter that might be lurking and nosing about for a tasty treat. Often mimicking thorns or berries, they live their lives out on trees and have quite the social lives protecting their young and communicating with each other through vibrational sounds that we humans cannot hear (we’re only just discovering this form of communication that is used by hundreds of species of bugs that we previously thought to be silent). The next time you’re out looking at a tree, take a really close look and see if you can uncover the magic cloaking that these tree hoppers use.
